Doctors Within Borders

Or just doctors.

Why pretend that something that exists, doesn't? Who has the right to erase the boundaries of our reach? Why let doctors bleed through borders, but not plumbers? They need pipes in the developing world. Joe the Plumber doesn't deserve a working vacation in Central America?

The answer isn't to have Plumbers without borders. It's to have borders. And for doctors to work within them. Because it is within those borders that the most gain can be made.

If a child in a "needy" area of a developing country gets enough medical attention to not die from tuberculosis he can continue his life as a poor child in a destitute area of a developing nation. If a child on a reserve in Saskatchewan is given enough medical attention to not die from tuberculosis he can continue his life as a poor child in a poor area of one of the most advanced and most desirable nations in the world.

This is where my cold calculation comes into play. We have finite resources, and the world has seemingly infinite problems. We need to stop fantasizing about everyone in the world having the same, about everyone "deserving equal treatment because everyone is equal". Everyone is not equal. Some of us live in one of the most advanced and desirable nations in the world, some of us don't. We need to concentrate our resources.

And focus them within our borders.

  1. I gotta say man - that's pretty messed up.

Who decides who gets what then? Who decides who is worthy? Is it the worthy who decide?

If so it seems kinda arbitrary...kinda like feudalism or the medieval period in general.

Who knows - maybe you would (or will) be deemed not worthy. Then what would you do?

  2. Die. I've said before, if there was a way for me to insure my daughter surviving, I'd be the first to volunteer.

It's not really arbitrary. Those most likely to survive, who are literate for instance, analytical, educated, and understand the need to not overpopulate, aka those with the best tools to survive on a planet that is collapsing, and the best chance of getting us out of the mess.

If I'm not one of those people, I don't think you would be either, as you're likely not that much higher in usefulness than I am :)

Sorry about the late comment back, I'm going to make a point to keep this thing up, but commenting over at stageleft takes up TIME haha. I should copy some of those over here, ad I'm a damn good writer, even in commenting.
